This page describes MSOE laptop setup. We assume the laptop starts with an image that matches the regular (non-departmental) MSOE student setup, but with the following software installed:

  • An LTS version of the JDK. As of Fall 2026, this would be Java 25, but the specific version is not critical. Please configure the login so javac and java are valid commands at the command prompt.
  • IntelliJ, community edition
  • BlueJ
  • Spyder
  • Anaconda
  • Python for command-line users (so that python is a valid command at the command prompt)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio

In addition, please set the following:

  • Students should be able to use the laptop without a password
  • Have a WiFi password preinstalled (as done in the past)
  • Configure the file system to show file name extensions, i.e. Prob1.java, not Prob1
  • If simple, create a bookmark for msoeopcomp.org, but they will be directed to that site with handouts
  • Turn off sounds like boot sounds, error alerts, etc. Ideally the laptop would make no sounds since the teams are working next to each other.
